Light And Dark

I'm a bit ill educated on the musical history of Lee Coombs but after looking at his release catalog I'd say it was fair to assume that he's one of the prominent DJ's of the past 10 years or so. I received two of his newest tracks that appear on his third album 'Light and Dark', including the title track and I'm hooked. I suggest you have a listen to them too but first here's a bit of info about the man.

‘Light and Dark’ is in Coombs own words “a true tech funk album”, an amalgam of sounds and influences from dance music’s often disparate scenes. Alongside acts like Meat Katie, Dylan Rhymes and Elite Force, Coombs has pioneered this open minded attitude and helped forge the sound of ‘tech funk’, a fusion of techno, breaks, house and electro. On this long player Coombs takes the tech funk spirit and develops it to the n’th degree, it is a true melting pot of influences, from the opening bars of the Diva driven Control with the wonderful Katherine Ellis to the final refrain of the heavily Echo & the Bunnymen inspired ‘Blues I’m Singing’.

Tattoos – Fashion Or Cosmetic Rebellion

One of the most famous tattoo artists (oh, yes, they’re called artists! Tattoos are a certified form of art) is Scott Campbell. What made him famous? Tattooing. Who made him famous? The rich and famous. And fashionable. Marc Jacobs? He’s got ink all over him. Cartoon ink! Spongebob, Eric Cartman (from Southpark), his pet bull terriers, a Simpson version of Marc himself, two renditions of the Oui porn magazine, Shameless on his chest, Bros Before Hos on the forearm (a tattoo carried by Marc, Scott Campbell himself and a small circle of friends), a couch on his right hip and so many colored stars.

Do-It-Yourself Tattoos Pose Health Risks

LIBERTYVILLE, IL - FEBRUARY 26: Professional tattoo artist and co-owner Eric Lynn applies a tattoo to customer Teresa Ragan of Vernon Hills, Illinois February 26, 2004 at Liberty Tattoo in Libertyville, Illinois. Professional tattoo artists, as well as health officials, have voiced concerns with the current trend in amateur tattoo work and body piercing. They feel people need to be educated about the possible effects, such as infections and the potential spread of Tetanus and Hepatitis B or C, associated with amateur tattoo and body piercing.

The Tattoo Artist

The Tattoo Artist, by Jill Cimemt is an enchanting short novel, beautifully executed and deceptively simple in plot.

The story begins in 1918. Sara Ehrenreich, daughter of Jewish immigrants, works as a shopgirl on Manhattan's Lower East Side. One night at a lecture series, she hears a man speak about art, politics, and revolution. This man is Philip, and it is with him that Sara falls in love, learns about Marxism, and discovers she is an artist. Philip has money from his parents, Sara sells her paintings, and they live this way until the Depression when the money runs out. When an art collector offers Philip a job collecting masks from native islanders in the South Seas, the two jump at the chance.

Accidentally marooned on the first island they stop at, Philip and Sara attempt to make a life with the Ta'un'uus. Thirty years later Sara returns to New York City, completely covered in tattoos, famous for a photo of her in Life magazine. As is the way of the native Ta'un'uus, each design represents an important piece of Sara's life, and as we get to know what they mean to her, Sara's story really unfolds.

Beautifully and simply written with haunting distance, it is almost impossible not to fall into this book and keep reading until it is finished. What starts as a dream of revolution and peaceful utopia ends in a much quieter examination of the meaning of home, from Sara's Eastern European ancestry to the cramped apartments of Manhattan to the sunlit shores of Ta'un'uu. Written on a scale both grand and small, this might be the perfect book for anyone whose ever had that dislocated feeling of returning from a journey but not really coming home.

Well it looks like the summer is officially over and its time to batten down the hatches for a long wet winter. But, lets not get too down about it all, especially when we've got this cheeky little mix from DJ/Producer Haynes. Heres what he had to say about it;

"Here’s a mixtape I’ve been working on for the last gasps of summer. Its themed as the kind of songs that would go down well as the sunsets, so needless to say quite different from allot of the techno stuff I play. Lots of disco, old and new, but also just things which give a sense of Euphoria. Plus allot of mixing and sampling."

Your Love

Michael Zavros

It's been a little quiet round here of late, mostly due to Bestival, holiday and a shed load of work all blending into one and being over much too soon. Well the work goes on of course. Anyway, I'm in the process of posting some new music so keep em peeled.

First up is a touch of French House from Tysaun Alexanderic who is actually based in South Carolina. The EP title track ' Your Love' has already got plenty of airplay on some summer Ibiza House compilations and even on Radio 1 thanks to Andy George and Jaymo.
